Something a little bit different today….but still sewing.
My silk curtains that I made a few years ago were in need of a little TLC.
I had to take a piece off the edge that had been ruined by the sun. So, whilst I was giving them my attention, I decided to give them a lovely tie.
With some fabric left over I made a tie which kept the pleats in place and gave the curtain a nice little extra flourish ❤️
It was so simple to make, I wish I’d made it years ago. The most difficult bit was deciding what size to make it.

The trick to cutting a smooth edge instead of a jagged edge is in the way you use your scissors….
✂️ Hold your scissors wide open and put them on the edge you’re cutting.
✂️ Slowly close your scissors, moving them around the edge you’re cutting in 1 long continuous cut.
✂️Don’t use lots of short, sharp, cuts as this will make the edges jagged and not smooth
✂️ As long as your scissors are sharp (try to never use blunt scissors) the edge will be round and smooth.
✂️Watch the reel to see how it’s done. The reel shows a paper pattern being cut but this applies equally to cutting a piece of fabric.
I hope this helps as smooth edges improve the look of the finished item.

Here are a few tips which will help when sewing eyes on a felt toy….
🌼 use pins to check the position of the eyes
🌼 use a few strands of embroidery thread to make the stitches thicker
🌼 leave a strand of thread dangling before making the first stitch…you will cut it off at the end
🌼 sew the first eye and then push the needle through to the opposite side of the head to sew the other eye
🌼 when the last stitch is sewn, sew the thread into the head, away from the eye
🌼 pull the thread slightly and cut it off. It will then shrink back inside the head so it is not seen
🌼 do the same with the dangling thread from the start so that is also hidden from view.

I designed it as a kit for children to make. It’s going to be offered as a prize for the @sewasoftie event in July. Trixi, who runs sewasoftie encourages children to sew and runs a month long event when she hosts many creative people sharing lovely sewing tutorials suitable for children.

This is Caspar who is 9 years old who has just made James Fox all by himself 🦊
His Mum sent me a photo of him and I was so absolutely impressed with what he had made that I asked permission to share the photos with you.
He is now being James’s tailor and making his waistcoat with a blueberry lining.
These images are so fabulous for so many reasons. They show that we should never underestimate how much children are actually capable of with the right amount of encouragement and support.
They also show that boys can absolutely do things that may be considered a female biased activity.

You can use felt scraps, cut up into tiny pieces to stuff your bears.
It saves them being wasted which is good for the environment 🌏 I also add all of my cotton thread ends into my stuffing pile so nothing is wasted.
This little bear being stuffed is Mathilda Bear, a cutie full of scraps. You can add some dried rice in as well if you want to give a heavier, squishier feel 🐻
Mathilda is being made by my daughter Olivia when she came along to the Earth Day Acts of Kindness Day in April.

I am very pleased to introduce you all to the newest member of Theodore Bear and Friends. Welcome, Benjamin Bear Cub🐻
This pattern is a cute little hand sewn project which is easy enough for complete beginners. It's a perfect project to do on a calm, relaxing day or even to sew in front of the TV🧵🪡
Benjamin has contrast colour ears and is sporting a rather dapper bow tie.🎀
He measures approx 15cm when complete, so he's a little bigger than Mini Mathilda Bear and quite a bit smaller than Theodore Bear.
He's best made out of wool blend felt. If you don't have any felt, I am in the middle of adding some colours to the website that you will be able to purchase soon. I'm doing that in response to so many people who have struggled to find the right felt to buy so this should make it easier for you.

I would like to say a huge thank you ❤️ to each and every person who follows this account.
It only started 2 months ago and already this small space of the internet has grown to be a fabulous community. Today it reached 1000 but that’s just a number. It’s knowing that the number of people who are enjoying seeing the cute photos and videos is growing and hopefully that the joy is spreading ❤️
I have always shied away from social media, both in my personal life and for my little business, but I have been blown away by what an absolute delight it has been to be on Instagram.
I consciously interact with nice and kind people, many of whom share a mutual love of sewing, craft, creativity and all things nice.
